CORE Health Foundation awarded $25K to build an ADA accessible fishing pier in Austin
AUSTIN, Texas— The CORE Health Foundation, a disability advocacy organization, received a $25,000 grant from the Austin Parks Foundation to help fund a wheelchair-accessible fishing pier on Lady Bird Lake in downtown Austin. "We see this pier as a great example of a public/private partnership with the CORE Health Foundation working with the city and many others to provide facilities for everyone." said Charlie McCabe, executive director, Austin Parks Foundation.
Austin native, Anthony King, an avid fisherman and former parole officer, suffered a stroke this summer that left him in a wheelchair and dramatically reduced his fishing options. He’s extremely excited about the pier on Lady Bird Lake. “I love to fish because of the peace, serenity and relaxation it offers,” King said. “I think the pier will be an awesome addition to the city and especially to Lady Bird Lake as it will easily fit into the landscape and still maintain the beauty of the area.”
“This wheelchair accessible pier will allow every Austinite and visitor to the area the ability to fish on this popular urban lake without the need for a boat,” said Eric Makowski, trustee of the Austin-based CORE Health Foundation and past president of the Brain Injury Association of Texas.
On October 14th, 2010, the Austin City Council approved the construction of the Fishing Pier through a unanimous vote of 7-0 following a recommendation by the Mayors Committee for People with Disabilities and the Austin Parks and Recreation Board.
The CORE Health Foundation continues to seek donations and volunteers to make this pier another Austin treasure. Individuals and corporations can show their support for the project by adding their names to a commemorative piece of the pier.
